Ministry of Livestock Breeding & Fisheries issued new regulation to protect the future viability of the fisheries industry. Authority limit the number of foreign fishing trawlers allowed to operate in Myanmar territorial waters to 500. According to the new regulation, foreign fishing companies need following requirement:

- To form or join joint venture companies in Myanmar

- To invest in at least one Myanmar-based fishery related business, such as cold storages, fish meal plants or fish or shrimp breeding projects

- To sell their catch to Myanmar and pay a 25 percent tax on total sales

- To pay a minimum monthly fee of US$ 25 for each gross registered tonnage (GRT) of a trawler’s storage capacity

U Than Tun, Director General of the Fishing Department said the new regulation were in line with plans by Myanmar to establish an international fish market and to promote the fishery sector. The earnings from Myanmar fishing companies had totaled US$ 218 millions in the 2000-01 fiscal year, up from US$ 183 million the previous year and the number of Myanmar trawlers increased by 100 last year to 2,000.

Fishery Department figures show that Myanmar has an estimated 1.8 million metric tons of fish stocks. The maximum sustainable yield is 1.05 million metric tons a year. Myanmar fishermen catch up to 800,000 tons a year.
